Introduction to the knitting technology

Knitting is a technique of converting the yarn into a piece of fabric or garment. While carrying out this process, multiple loops of yarn called as stitches get created in a line or tube. At one time, numerous active stitches are present on the needle. Several repeated rows of intermeshing of loops form a knitted fabric.

For accomplishing the procedure of knitting, we can either use hands or knitting machines. For bulk production, the manufacturers employ knitting devices of reliable quality. Our company is one of the chief knitting machine manufacturers in India. We always prefer to acquire machines from trustworthy vendors.

When did knitting begin?

The most primitive knitted fabrics got created in the region of middle-east. The socks recovered from the fourth-century tombs in Egypt, incorporated in them a form of looping called nalbinding. This looping technique makes use of a single knitting needle for creating the loops instead of employing two sewing needles.

There are several other examples of the materials that the researchers have obtained from the Egyptian civilization of the seventh century. All these fabrics showed loop patterns suggesting that they created by using the traditional hand knitting method with two needles.

The discoverers have also found knitted cushions in the tombs of Spain that dated back to the thirteenth century. During this period, knitted purses for keeping religious relics, knitted gloves worn during religious activities and knitted girdles were highly popular. Four existing paintings from the fourteenth century depict the Virgin Mary form of knitting. It further suggests that the craft was highly familiar among the women during that time.

The increasing demand for knitted caps in the fourteenth century led to the establishment of the English hand knitting industry. In 1488, the parliament formulated the Cappers' Act to fix the rates of the caps and stop the cappers from making undue profits. In the sixteenth century, there used to be an insatiable demand for knitted stockings, which further flourished the young industry.

Knitted fabric:

We can employ several types of yarns, size of needles and stitches to create the knitted fabrics. Through knitting, we can produce the materials of different properties varying in their look, integrity, colour, weight, texture, heat retention, and water resistance.

For creating knitted fabrics, we can employ the techniques of hand or machine knitting. This process of formation of knitted garments involves the interlocking of a series of loops carried out by using a needle.

Needle holds the existing loop while there occurs the creation of a new loop in the front of the old loop. The previous loop then gets over the latest loop to form the knitted fabric.

The knitting technique is different from the process of weaving in a way that it involves a single piece of yarn to create the garment. This knitted textile consists of the vertical columns of the loops which we call as wales and horizontal rows called as courses.

The knitted fabric possesses several useful properties that make it appropriate for a wide range of garments like gloves, underwear, tights and other close-fitting apparels. The loop pattern of the knitted fabric is such that it can get easily stretched to fit the body shapes. The air that gets trapped inside the loops helps to keep the wearer warm.
